THE group fighting to save Lydney's open air pool from closure has vowed to fight on after coming away from a town council meeting on Monday with many of its questions unanswered.
"We won't be beaten – we will do everything we can to keep the pool," said action committee spokeswoman and secretary Jane Matthews after the meeting.
"We have a really strong group and we are all together on this. We also have the Friends of Whitecross behind us, and I am trying to contact Diana Organ and Lord Bledisloe, whose family donated the pool to the town, and other influential people.
"We will be grateful for any other support we can get, and obviously we will need money and other forms of help."
The group presented their questions to the council on Monday pointing out that the town needed the open air pool in spite of having a brand new pool at the leisure centre.
Apart from everything else they felt children might be tempted to swim in the canal, the River Lyd or the Severn if the pool closed.
The group sought details of the costs of running and maintaining the pool, the position regarding public liability insurance and the possibility of council funds being directed to the pool.
The council agreed that it would look at the group's questions in detail but was only able to answer that insurance on the pool could only be continued if the council was included in the steering committee. It also agreed to write to Mrs Matthews with details of the pool costs.
It also emerged that the pool is believed to have a leak. The council may refill it to check on this.
The group says that a public meeting should have been called to discuss the future of the pool.
"We agree that it does need upgrading, particularly the health and safety aspect, but it is a valuable public amenity," said Mrs Matthews.
