PLANS are being hatched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Severn rail bridge disaster next year by erecting memorial plaques on both sides of the river.

But where should the plaque on the Forest side go?

"It would need to be in a suitable and accessible location and that does present some difficulties on the Forest side," says historian Paul Barnett, the driving force behind the group intent on preserving and recording the 81 wrecks at Purton.

Mr Barnett says the plaques are already ordered. They will include the names of the crew members of both the Wastdale and the Arkendale, the tankers which collided and then exploded bringing down two spans of the bridge on the night of October 25, 1960.

Among the five men who lost their lives was well known Cinderford boxer Percy Simmonds. The late Mr George Cooper, of Buckshaft Road, Cinderford, survived. After being in the water for over four hours he was picked up by a rescue boat and landed at Lydney.

Mr Barnett would like the family and friends of those involved to attend special unveiling ceremonies.
