HELPERS are wanted to assist the physically handicapped to go horse riding. Since 1989 the Forest of Dean Group of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has arranged weekly sessions for riders aged from four to 54.
First at the Lea Bailey riding school and then at the Littledean Trekking Centre, they moved to the Newnham Equestrian Centre in 1995. "The indoor school provides protection against the weather when necessary," says the Group's Suzanne Jackson.
"Earlier this year the RAF Innsworth lodge of the Buffaloes donated a mobile mounting ramp. It was made by B.H. Cecil & Sons of Blakeney and is a great success.
"Each week we cater for around 30 riders. With wheelchair access, more riders will be able to enjoy this pastime – but we are short of helpers.
"Our trained instructors supervise the sessions – Marilyn Granville-Sloper on Thursday afternoons and Pam Jones on Friday evenings. Helpers do not need any qualifications or previous experience.
"You choose whether you wish to lead a pony or walk beside the rider in the indoor or outdoor school, or on fine days around the fields. Transport can be arranged to and from the Centre."
The Forest RDA is one of 16 Gloucestershire groups. This July the national and international dressage championships were held at Hartpury College.
Those interested can contact Marilyn on Dean 543307.
