GORDON Jones and fellow Viney Hill residents are delighted with remedial work which has stopped their homes and gardens getting flooded whenever it rains.

Mr Jones explained the problem was tackled by some judicial work to restore a former pond.

"Whenever it rained the run-off and water from drains come onto our properties and we contacted the local councillor who suggested we approach the Highways Department," he said.

"Neil Maxfield from Highways suggested one remedy might be a pipe under the road to a field next door, but the owner of the field seemed less than happy about this. Then they investigated an old pond at the top of the village which had fallen into disrepair.

"They involved the Forestry Commission and had to wait for an old walnut tree to go dormant before it was lopped. Then they brought in a work gang and a digger to clear out the pond.

"The driver was a real expert – when he had finished there was hardly a tyre mark to show where he had been. And it did the trick – when it rains now the pond fills up and our properties stay dry.

"I gather the people nearer the pond are also delighted and they are planning to plant native flower species like marsh marigolds to make it even more attractive.

"I also think it is good to have some positive news for a change – a group of people who have just got on and done a marvellous job, taking pride in their work."
