So far as the promise of a referendum is concerned I would go even further. David Cameron will "give" us a referendum if he wins the next election. In plain English (if that is permitted by Brussels) it's called "blackmail". Vote for me and you get, don't vote for me and you don't get. We are not going to get one from the Lib Dems or the Labour Party either.

It makes you wonder how many horseburgers the leaders of the main parties have eaten.

A national newspaper published a map showing that Romanian horses were slaughtered locally and frozen for transport to France. The meat was processed there and sent to Luxembourg where lasagne was made and then despatched to the UK.

It transpires that Romania has the high rate of TB in Europe and much of it is drug-resistant. It is also highly infectious. It is no good Mark Harper saying it was "not helpful" to speculate on the likely number of Romanians and Bulgarians who could come to Britain. It won't be very helpful if a quarter of a million seek treatment on the National Health Service.
