NEWNHAM Club is hosting a fundraiser with a difference on Tuesday, (May 3).
At 7.30pm a quadrophonic version of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells will be played to raise money for Newnham Church bells.
The event is the brainchild of broadcaster and sound expert David Freeman, who works as a DJ on Jazz FM and lives in the village. He says: “I’ve worked in radio for years and I remember Quadrophonic sound in the 1970s as really exciting technology. It involves playing music through at least four different speakers. Tubular Bells was recorded in this format as well as the version that listeners are likely to be familiar with. This seemed like an appropriate piece to choose to help us make sure the church bells aren’t lost. We’re aiming to raise £130,000 in the next three years to restore all eight bells.”
The event has been made possible by Ceritech Audio in Cinderford who are supplying the audio equipment to play the recordings. David says: “We’d like to say a big thank you to them. We’re promising a 1970s sound experience, although the quality of amplifiers and speakers is likely to make it even better.”
Tickets are available on the door.
