AN appeal through the Review to help pinpoint the location of a quarry in a Victorian painting has come up trumps.
But the answer that historians Dr Anthony Lynch and Terry Moore-Scott received, was not exactly what they were expecting.
The mid-19th century painting A Stone Quarry in the Forest Dean by noted artist EC Williams has the addition “near Bream”.
A Review reader suggested the view was of Bearse Farm Quarry at St Briavels.
After visiting the site, the historians from Minsterworth are almost certain it is the view captured in the painting.
Now they are appealing to readers of the Review again in the hope that somebody has a picture of the quarry when it was working.
Mr Moore said: “We are 99 per cent certain that the picture is of Bearse Farm Quarry although it has changed greatly because of the realignment of the road.
“We are very keen to obtain any old photographs of the quarry when it was still open, before the realigned B4228 road encroached right into it and before it was allowed to be covered in trees for protection.”
