A NEW Rainbows unit has opened in Lydney – the first since 2006.
Leader Nikki Knight was joined not only by fellow adult volunteers but eight excited children all keen to see their new venue at Holy Trinity Church on Primrose Hill.
Nikki decided to form a unit after moving to the Forest and was surprised the nearest groups were in Bream and Cinderford.
The experienced Rainbow leader has spent the last three months fundraising to get her new project off the ground alongside Lydney Brownies leader Katherine Clamp, and Lydney Guide leader Celina Doull.
District commissioner, Helen Frost said: "Apart from the grant from Girlguiding, Nikki has contacted Tesco and Lydney Town Council. Following a meeting with Tesco, they are being very helpful with providing equipment and resources to run activities. The unit needs to find the money to pay for the membership fees for Girlguiding, which are due in February, and provides the insurance for all activities. A lot of fundraising will take place between November and February."
Last Tuesday, children aged between five and seven enjoyed an hour of singing 'silly' songs and playing games.
The Forest of Dean Lions have agreed to donate £500 towards costs and it's hoped this amount should cover the census payment, which acts as an insurance, on Thinking Day 2015.
Nikki Knight said: "The meeting was really good, all the girls enjoyed themselves and couldn't believe it when an hour was over! They all want to come back again next week. We played games, sang silly songs, listened to an Olivia story and had a Rainbow chat about what things they would like to do in the future at Rainbows.
"On behalf of the group we are delighted and very grateful for this money as it ensures that Lydney Rainbows will have a secure future."
The unit are always looking for new members and adult volunteers, for more information call Helen Frost on 01594 369473.
