PARENTS of two children in Magor affected by a rare genetic disorder are trying to raise awareness of the condition.

They are being helped by friends from Magor School in their bid to set up an information group on Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome.

Two of the supporters, Brigitte and Tim Higgins, dressed as pirates for a fund-raising stall at the Undy fun day organised by the Tesco distribution depot in Magor.

Brigitte Higgins, who is helping the campaign, said: "We have a family in school who have two children who are affected by the condition.

"They want to set up a charity to give families affected by the condition more information.

"They have been fund-raising and need another £300 to be able to register as a charity."

Shwachman-Diamond particularly affects the pancreas and bone marrow which produces blood cells.
