THERE was a record turnout for Coleford's big, big Friday night out – the annual lights switch on.

"We had a fantastic night, and I would say we had the biggest crowds we've ever seen at the event," said Christmas lights committee spokesman Kim Wassel.

As usual there was a parade from the Fire Station to the Clock Tower led by the Forest Emeralds. Next came school groups, followed by Mother Christmas and Father Christmas in separate lorries – maybe they're not speaking to each other this year! The fairies too had their own transport.

"The lights are really good and everything is working...now!" said Kim, whose gallant band of volunteers has been working hard over the last couple of weeks to make a great display.

"We had lots of new volunteers this year and we would like to give them a big thank you. Without new blood we just couldn't carry on," she said.
