MONMOUTHSHIRE schools celebrated Dydd Santes Dwynwen – the Welsh St Valentine’s Day – on Monday, in the approach to the visit of the National Eisteddfod to Abergavenny

Council staff, school children and many others wore red in commemoration of a fifth century Welsh saint, while discussing their love for Wales and celebrating the county’s Welsh culture.

Over 30 local schools took part in the celebrations, including Chepstow School, Dewstow, Durand and Ysgol Gymraeg y Ffin primary schools in Caldicot.

Durand Primary devoted their morning assembly big talk to what they love about Wales and being Welsh with some children wearing traditional costume.

Monmouth’s Osbaston Primary held a special assembly to learn about Santes Dwynwen and the Eisteddfod and discussed what was important about Wales.

Meanwhile Caldicot Male Voice Choir marked the occasion by wearing red too, at its rehearsal, as did the Monmouthshire Eisteddfod Choir.
