Fortnightly on Sundays, the ex-naval launch Toura D conveys a dozen sightseers from outside Chepstow's Boat Inn up to Tintern and back again – departure times varying according to the state of the tide.
"It's the first boat on the Wye with a passenger carrying licence in decades," the boat's owner Martin Peebles told the Review.
"To qualify for the licence the boat had to satisfy 30 safety mechanical and insurance criteria – which it passed thanks to the expert guidance of Mike Johnson of the Gloucester Harbour Trustees.
"We have used the Toura D previously to provide river trips for Friends of the Princess, but now we can address a wider market."
Martin and his crewman Terry King are volunteers with The Severn Princess Restoration Group, the society which rescued this former Aust-Beachley ferry. Both have been granted boatmen's licences by Monmouthshire County Council – and are now taking exams for the Grade 2 Boatmaster's Licence.
"We are in the process of building a pontoon at Tintern, which means our passengers will eventually have time for a walk, a pint and a bar snack in a local Tintern pub before the return journey," he explains.
"At present we give a full historical and geographical commentary along the Wye valley, which is never the same from day to day."
Each trip lasts almost two hours and the cost is £12.
"We have also taken weekday block bookings from local companies looking for corporate entertainment with a difference," he adds. Details are available on 01291 621318.
