I HAVE lived in Blakeney for 18 years. I have driven a number of different cars around the corner at the top of the hill out of Blakeney to Lydney nearly every day of that period at a variety of speeds, including, I admit, in excess of the posted speed limit (60mph). It is a perfectly safe corner to traverse at speed.

I have been overtaken by ambulances and police cars at speed in the same vicinity.

In so many respects the damage is self-inflicted. It would be really informative if the inquest for every fatality on the A48 and the cause, were published in an easy to find place so that the true facts could inform any debate.

I suspect a contributing factor is the uphill overtaking lane that too often encourages a high speed entry into said corner. Never mind causes however, the general answer to the problem is to save people from themselves.

The whole nearside kerb needs a double height Armco rail running from the little pull-in in front of the house for about 100m. This will catch cars leaving the road.

There also needs to be Armco running in parallel down the middle of the road to catch a car and stop it from rebounding into the opposite lane and oncoming traffic.

Thus a car that leaves the road for whatever reason is channelled hopefully to a safe place to stop further along the road where it straightens.

As has been said in other places, each danger point on the A48 needs a local assessment of danger factors, and thus a local solution.
