A GUIDE to a network of cycle routes in the Forest was this week launched by Forest Enterprise and the Forest of Dean District Council.
It takes the form of a map which highlights waymarked cycle trails, notably the circular Family Cycling Trail, together with linking routes leading to and from attractions such as Mallard's Pike Lake and population centres.
It also defines the all-terrain cycling area near the Pedalabikeway Cycle Centre at Cannop.
More importantly it defines some 200 miles of metalled tracks recommended as cycle routes, advising that cycling on softer grassy ways could harm the environment.
"In order to protect the sensitive areas of the Forest and grassy paths and tracks that can be damaged by cycling, we have developed a policy that sets out where cycling is permitted," the guide states.
"Cycling is restricted to the hard stone routes which are available all year and little used except for timber haulage.
"By keeping to these routes you will be helping to protect the natural heritage of the area."
Markers for the routes have been provided by the Cycle Touring Club.
Forest deputy surveyor Rob Guest and council leader Anne Martin sat side by side on a buddy bike on the Family Cycle Trail on Tuesday to launch the map, which is printed on waterproof paper and costs £2.
It is available from tourist information centres, cycle hire centres and shops, Forest Enterprise sites and other outlets.
