A SOGGY Yorkley Community Centre and Recreation ground was the setting for a mini-marathon and fun day last Saturday (May 21).

The event was held to raise funds for play equipment in the village.

Organiser Kate Lord said: “We made nearly £750 despite the weather, which means we’ve reached our target for match-funding.

“Around 20 people braved the showers and took part in the five-mile run and the shorter family fun run. We had stalls from Lydney Tennis Club, 2 Intuitive in Lydney and LVC Fitness in Coleford as well as a number of market stalls and activities.”

Mark Green and Vanessa Pegler won the five mile race, while Daisy Lewis won the shorter course.

Kate said: “Daisy did really well, we were all really impressed. We were pleased with the turn out despite the weather and we’re delighted that we raised so much money.”

Chair of Yorkley Community Centre, Sharon Freeman told the Review: “We needed to raise around £2,700 to match the bid we’ve put in.

“We recently hosted a dinner in the centre for 119 people. Three of us did all the cooking but we raised £1,500 so it was worth it. We have to wait three months now for a decision from Biffa. We’ve applied to them as part of the landfill communities fund, but we’re hopeful the play park will be ready for next summer.”
