PARENTS travelling to and from Lydney's Church of England primary school in Bream Road are being urged to use the nearby Forest of Dean District Council car park and avoid parking on the roadside.

The plea comes from local councillor Alan Preest who fears that unless the volume of traffic on the school run is controlled there will be an accident.

"The situation is causing me and many others considerable concern. I had an opportunity to observe the situation there on a few occasions last week. With fading light, a low sun and heavy passing traffic, there is a very obvious danger," he said.

Coun Preest said it appeared the message that the district council had lifted parking charges for a period at the beginning and end of the school day had not reached all parents.

"There is no charge between 8.30am and 9.15am and 2.30pm and 3.15pm. It is welcome news for parents but for the majority it has fallen on deaf ears and there is a lot of congestion," he said.

"I would urge parents not to park on Bream Road but to use the car park. Even better, leave their cars at home and walk," he said.

Coun Preest said the county council were imposing parking restrictions on Bream Road in the New Year. He said "strenuous" ticketing enforcement would be encouraged to help alleviate the present problems.
