WORLD Water Day aims to highlight problems of poor sanitation and access to clean water in the developing world – and at Heywood Community School, Cinderford!

Head teacher Geoff Tinker is concerned that his pupils do not have access to free drinking water except from outdated water fountains, and fears they run the risk of being dehydrated.

"After all, this is the 21st century," said Mr Tinker, who hopes that providing water in an attractive up-to-date way will encourage pupils to drink more.

The Water Warehouse, a Stroud-based company, is supplying the school with five water coolers and two fitted filters in the gym area for a period of six months free of charge.

The school will monitor pupils' reactions to the new supply and how much it becomes used, recording any signs of improvement in water consumption.

Coleford GP Dr Andrew Pearce of Brunston Surgery welcomed the initiative.

"I am extremely pleased to hear that steps have been taken to encourage the use of fresh water in schools," he said.

"The project has admirable objectives in reducing the amount of sugary and highly coloured drinks, as these commonly cause dental problems and also behavioural problems.

"My advice to young people would be to keep on drinking the cool stuff!"

World Water day this Thursday is supported by many organisations which would like access to water improved, pointing out that people can manage for weeks without food but for only a matter of a day or two without water.
