EIGHT carers at the Old Rectory Residential Care Home for the Elderly in Longhope had their sight removed temporarily as part of the sensory awareness training they received from Forest Sensory Services (FSS).
Jackie Frost, at FSS said: “The staff have successfully completed the first part of their certificated training and are far more aware of their residents’ needs.
“FSS aims and objectives are to improve flexibility between residents and carers maintaining the residents’ dignity. Visual impairment strikes at all ages and simple adjustments such as a coloured dinner plate contrasting to food can help to maintain independence.
“FSS are working on a national pilot scheme in conjunction with Wiltshire sight and Thomas Pocklington Trust to enhance the lives of visually impaired people living in nursing homes. The training is free and involves being visually impaired for an hour.”
If you are in the care profession, at a nursing home or as an individual carer, and would like to know more about the scheme, contact Jackie on 01594 827711.
