UP to 80 per cent of thefts in the Cinderford district could be related to addicts seeking cash for drugs.
The alarming figure was disclosed this week by Insp David Pickstock who is leading a police campaign to stamp on local drugs dealers.
In the wake of recent publicity about drug abuse, Insp Pickstock said the level of use still remained largely a hidden problem in the Forest.
But the use of heroin was high and he warned: "The fact is that if someone is using cannabis this year there is a strong possibility it will be heroin next year."
Insp Pickstock said it was likely every youngster above the age of 12 had come into contact with someone either using or selling drugs.
He confirmed that police had now discovered crack cocaine in the county – an instantly addictive drug.
"We do not want this in the Forest. It is a drug dealer's dream and users immediately become hooked," he said.
In a fresh appeal to the public, Insp Pickstock said his officers wanted to target dealers and welcomed information about anyone selling drugs.
He urged people with information about drug dealers to contact the Crimestoppers line (0800 555111), telephone the police at Cinderford (01452 275557) or the Review (01594 841113).
"We aim to make life uncomfortable for those selling drugs in the Forest. All the information we receive will be looked at and acted upon. There are some rough times ahead for those involved," said Insp Pickstock.
