NEW village signs have been erected at English Bicknor and Hillersland, and another is being considered for Symonds Yat Rock.
They are the work of Audrey Hart who designed them, and were made by Ted McAvoy, of Derbyshire, and Peter Neale, of Newland. Clive Bath generously agreed to undertake the actual erection of the signs.
They are among the last of the projects of the Millennium Committee formed in 1998 to plan local celebrations for the year 2000.
A calendar for the year, with each month illustrating a local scene, was soon sold out, and a locally written The Parish of English Bicknor in the 20th Century also proved to be very popular.
The celebrations began with a New Year's Eve party with fireworks, and there was a barn dance. For 15 days in July there was a 'Parish at Home Fortnight' with the village fete, a cheese-and-wine party, a talk on parish history, footpath walks, a tour of the parish by minibus, a craft show, a concert, open gardens, and church services.
The Millennium Committee received no grants to fund these activities. The full cost of the village signs is covered by the proceeds of the different projects and events undertaken during 2000.
