A SOLDIER based at Beachley Barracks has died in a parachute accident in Germany.

Lance corporal Ali Woodford, of 1 Rifles, died on Tuesday, September 29 during an ‘adventurous training expedition’.

The 26-year-old, who was originally from London had recently been promoted to lance corporal.

He leaves behind his wife Samantha and three-year-old son Oscar John. The battalion’s commanding officer described him as “the epitome of a thinking Rifleman.”

His commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Grist, said: “Lance Corporal Ali Woodford was a remarkable force within the battalion.

“A character among characters, he drank deep from life’s opportunities and was the first to volunteer for a testing task.

“It was typical of him to be taking up the challenge of parachuting.

“His bright, cheerful character was one that was sought out; he was a leader with presence and drive.

“He was always a man who could offer an opinion on how to improve life; the epitome of a thinking Rifleman.

“The effort he put in on his promotion course to lance corporal has entered into battalion legend – whilst never being the fastest, he was always accredited with giving the most.

“We will miss his enthusiasm, his energy and his bright view on life. He was a great team player and a man to have at your back.”

Outside of work Lance Corporal Woodford was a keen golfer and an aspiring DJ.
