LYDNEY Training Band held a brass and percussion workshop.

The workshop was predominantly aimed at young learners from the Forest of Dean and other areas of Gloucestershire. It was decided that it would also be open to adult learners.

The principal tutor, Owen Farr, international tenor horn soloist, guided the day with a variety of music, aimed to involve all those taking part. He was assisted by three other tutors – Chris Howley, cornet, Ben Stratford, first baritone with Flowers Band and Steve Barnett, percussion with Tredegar Band.

The music selected covered a broad range of styles from simple training band arrangements, Disney film music to fourth section test pieces including an excerpt from The Journals of Phileas Fogg.

The day consisted of band rehearsals, sectionals and a finale concert and a quiz based on information supplied by the tutors.

A further highlight was a recital by Owen Farr covering his skills and technique on the tenor horn.

The organiser, Kerry Ford, said: “It was lovely to see so many youngsters enjoying the atmosphere, learning from the experts and making new friends.

“Working in sectionals with the tutors provided an ideal opportunity for them to test their new skills and get feedback.

“It was a great success and one that we would like to make an annual event.

“Also we are most grateful for the support we have received from Make Music Gloucestershire and the Arts Council.”
