GARDENING Gang members at Woolaston Primary School shared soup made from vegetables they had grown in their school garden with members of Woolaston Allotment and Garden Society (WAGS) recently.
The event was organised by the school’s own Gardening Gang as part of the national RHS Big Soup Share initiative. Six WAGS members attended, and had a guided tour of the school garden before joining the children in the hall to enjoy a variety of soups including carrot, pumpkin and French onion.
School Gardening Gang leader, Helen Price, said; “I hope it will be the first of many community events as it was so nice to see the different generations interacting.
“The children really enjoyed the occasion and WAGS were very enthusiastic about our working school garden. We hope they will come again to share some of their gardening skills and tips with us.”
Gardening will become even more embedded at Woolaston School in the coming months, thanks to a generous grant from the Summerfield Charitable Trust. The Gardening Gang is now purchasing a polytunnel, and other essential items that were previously beyond its means.
“We’re so excited about our new polytunnel,” added Mrs Price. “We expect it to be delivered any day now and it will make such a difference to what we can grow. We’ll be able to get seeds started much earlier, and hopefully avoid the problem of everything ripening during the summer holidays.”
The Big Soup Share was developed by the RHS to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its Campaign for School Gardening. More information is available at: www.
