AN inquest has been opened into the sudden death of a well-known Newnham man.

Mr Laurence (Laurie) James Clark, 61, had taught chemistry at the Forest E-Act Academy for many years and was the commanding officer at the 614 Lydney squadron cadets.

The former RAF officer was particularly well-known for his dedication to the Lydney cadets.

Ade Haines, of Lea Bailey, said he was shocked when he heard the news about Mr Clark. He said: "My son Dan was part of the Lydney cadets and did very well under the guidance of Laurie. He was an extraordinary man who had the ability to bring the best out in people. He had been a commanding officer for around 10 years. It is very sad news indeed."
