PETER Rabbit picked up more than just a carrot at this year’s Aylburton Carnival.

The much-loved Beatrix Potter character was the inspiration for the float designed by the Rickards and Newman families which won first prize – and the Bledisloe Cup – in the carnival procession on Saturday (July 14).

Second place went to the Mia-Rose Nursery with its topical World Cup float which the children had helped decorate.

In third were the children of Aylburton School who did most of the artwork for their “World of Books” float.

The runner-up float was the Abba Revival by Mark and Sandra Sargent, Lynn Andrzejuk and Nigel Sargent.

In the walking entries, Aylburton Acorns mothers and toddlers group were “busy bees and butterflies” with Jess Waskett winning the best adult prize as their “beekeeper”.

Paul Cornock, of Mia-Rose Nursery, said: “Children from as young as six months up to our pre-school children helped make flags and bunting with hand prints and artwork.

“Many parents and staff donated things to contribute towards our float – all-in-all it was a great collective effort.”

There were many attractions on the playing field including a barbecue, the grand draw, Punch and Judy, bouncy castle, bowling, classic bikes, teas and a bar.

The Forest of Dean Brass Band once again entertained the crowds with traditional music.

Later in the afternoon there was a tug-of-war and children’s races while the family fun dog show attracted a lot of attention.

In the community room there was a display of the latest plans to renovate and restore the village cross.

The winners of the grand draw were John Court who received £200, Sarah Howells who won a meal for two at The George in Aylburton and Tom Legge who won a meal for two at the The Globe in Alvington.
