A COOL nerve on a sweltering day enabled Cinderford to silence their doubters on Saturday as Rory Teague produced the penalty kick of the season so far to see off Jersey.

It was a fitting end to a tense and exciting game and this time the good fortune was with the Foresters. On the receiving end of some misfortunes this season, this time the boot was on the other foot – the brilliant right boot of Teague who successfully drove home a penalty from halfway.

And not even the most committed of Jersey supporters could deny Cinderford a richly deserved victory.

Head coach Dave Pointon said: "It's been a long time coming. but was thoroughly deserved. Even the Jersey coaches and players said that we were the better side."

Pointon said he was delighted for the players, the club and the dedicated supporters.

He added: "Our set piece was good. Our defence was good. But we still have plenty to work on and need to be more clinical in the opposition's half. It was pleasing to see all our players putting their hands up to produce the goods.

"The team is a tight-knit bunch now and the results are coming through. It's been hard work and we've seen lots of good things and that has built their confidence. Except for one game we could – and maybe should – have won all our previous fixtures. We have a few injuries to manage but are able to rotate players within our sizeable squad."

For the moment all the talk will be of Rory Teague's mighty and magnificent kick.

Teague had been involved from early in the game. He kicked two early penalty goals and then converted a penalty try as Cinderford led 13-9 at the interval.

Teague slotted penalty goal number three to give his team a cushion but Jersey threatened to spoil the party as they drew level with just five minutes remaining.

Cometh the hour...up stepped Teague the tormentor and, ultimately, the terminator.
