AMONG the dozens of surfers who took part in the weekend’s four star Severn Bore was a one-legged man from Cornwall.

Rik Bennett (Peg) has been taking part in the event for the last 12 years and enjoyed riding tides of 10.1 metres at the weekend.

He said: “I drive up from Cornwall on the highest tides of the year for the bore. It’s not just the wave, it’s the people and camaraderie that make it a great all-round experience. The ‘wave’ is different every time depending on sand banks and water in the river.

“(Given my disability) balance in general is a whole different ball game on the bore as some sections are bumpier than others and uneven.”

As ever, the three-day event attracted crowds to the river banks at Newnham-on-Severn and Minsterworth.

Stuart Ballard, secretary of the Severn Bore Riders’ club, added: “The sunshine and glassy water helped to put a nice show on for spectators. The conditions were perfect for surfers too.

“Although the tide wasn’t necessarily the biggest, the bore itself was the best it has been for a long time.”

The next four star bore is on Friday, April 8 (10.1m), Saturday, April 9 (10.2m) and Sunday, April 10 (10m). For times visit www.thesevernbore.co.uk/timetable
