FURTHER to the lead story on the front of the Review last week – young Corey Turner and his mother fain surprise and indignation that he has been excluded from school once again for the unacceptable nature of his hair style. The fact that this has happened before suggest that a. they knew the hair style was a rule breaker, and b. that the consequences were likely to be that Corey would be excluded for it.

How, we may ask, are teachers supposed to maintain authority and discipline in our schools when there are such blatant challenges to school rules? The mother is quoted as saying "I did have a go at the teacher and told them I thought they were out of order."

If her son goes to a school where the rules clearly state a hair style of this type is unacceptable then she should support the school and teach her son to respect his teachers and figures in authority rather than abetting them to defy them. Have they heard of the Respect Agenda that our current government feels is necessary to promote because so many in society these days degrade the life of those around them by refusing to show respect where it is due?

This may appear to be a trifling matter to some but it is indicative of the gradual slide we have seen over the years into bad maners, selfish behaviour and the "me" culture that pervades society today.
