I REFER to the letter from Anthony Reeve regarding what he regards as the 'ideal choice' for power generation. A choice is only possible when it's there to be chosen and since solar power is not developed to the scale required to supply the country's needs, it is not an option at this time. Therefore the choice has to be made from what is available now and nuclear power is clearly one of them.
Despite what Mr Reeves has said, there have been no nuclear explosions at any nuclear power stations. This is not an attempt to minimise the seriousness of events but it is safe to say that what has occurred in the past is extremely unlikely to happen again. Any major technological advance improves with time and experience, and since the commercial use of nuclear power has been with us for over half a century, a vast amount of experience has accumulated.
Before I retired I was in the nuclear industry for over 30 years and have never met anyone actually involved in the design, operation or construction of nuclear power that is opposed to nuclear power generation. Incidentally, there are countries with four hours or less of daylight during the winter months and I suspect they would have to think very carefully before they considered solar power even if it was an option!
