THE company which clamped a car in Chepstow's Conservative Club car park while a young mother and her baby were in the back seat say they are in a dilemma over repaying the £90 fee for the vehicle to be released.
"We have had some bad publicity over this but that does not really concern us because it goes with this job," said a spokesman for Park Rite.
"We did not know there was a baby in the car at the time, but there is no such thing as bad publicity - since this has happened the car park has been basically empty. It has certainly worked," he said.
Victims of the clamping were David Brain and his wife Abigail, of Alvington.
Mrs Brain was in the rear of the car with four days old Angel when they stopped in the car park while Mr Brain ran into a nearby laundry to pick up some washing.
On his return he found his vehicle had been clamped. He had to visit a nearby cashpoint to obtain money for its release.
"I was clamped at 16.54 and released at 17.01 – seven minutes later and that included the time it took me to go to the bank," said Mr Brain.
"We were anxious to get the baby home and that is why we stopped there," said Mr Brain. "It was only a couple of minutes and £90 seems over the top for that."
The Park Rite spokesman said the parking restriction had been widely and properly publicised and the signs had been agreed with the police.
"The problem is there is always someone stopping for just two minutes ... it goes on all day. But since all the publicity there has not been a problem," he said.
