I WOULD like a public meeting held in Caldicot called by our MP, local councillors, county councillors, or an interested political party, to discuss the latest high increases in the council tax.

It was no great joy to see that Monmouthshire County Council has this year charged the highest increase of council tax in the whole of England and Wales.

My house is in E band and so are 41 houses in my area of Caldicot, 36 of us are pensioners, and expected to pay £1,000 this year for the combined council and water rates. The county councillors say the increase was essential to maintain the quality of services, such as social services and education.

Having to pay such huge increases of over 33 per cent this last two years is appalling. Inflation has not gone up by the same rate nor have pensions.

The burden is affecting our quality of life. With all this high tax do we really need the further bureaucracy of four general managers for Abergavenny, Caldicot, Chepstow and Monmouth at £33,000 each a year? Will someone let us know exactly what their jobs entail? – Haydn Davies, Avon Close, Caldicot.
