THE little choir at Pillowell Primary School has won its way to the final of a prestigious music competition at the Royal Festival Hall in January.

The 13 little singers heard of their triumph after competing in the local rounds of School Song 2000 at St David's Hall in Cardiff.

"We couldn't believe it. We're so tiny and everybody else at the contest was so big and so professional. We came away with a certificate of merit and never dreamed we would go any further," said school secretary Wendy Wilding.

There were 17 choirs at Cardiff and only two places going for the Festival hall finals. Some 277 schools throughout Britain – 1,200 children in all – were singing for a place.

"When we were told we had got a place it just seemed to impossible to be true," said Mrs Wilding. "We don't even have a conductor."

The school's next problem was finding the expenses needed for the trip to London.

"We were thinking of making an appeal for sponsorship," said Mrs Wilding. "It would be hard for some of our families to afford everything."

The school then heard that £100 had been given towards its expenses which was being presented at the Royal Oak on Wednesday this week after the children sing for local pensioners at their annual Christmas lunch.

And such is the new-found fame of the little singers that television cameras will be there to broadcast the event.
