FOLLOWING the closure of Yorkley school for two days because of snow, children returned to find that head teacher, Kate Burke, had set them a challenge.

With her own children, William and Chloe, she had built a wonderful snowman, complete with 'mop top'. The challenge was for the schoolchildren to build a better sculpture out of snow during their break and lunchtime. So, the children got to work.

During lessons, the snow was also used as a tool for learning – in Science lessons the children learned about the reversible changes that can be seen in frozen and melted snow.

Design and Technology came into play when building igloos – they talked about building  strong structures, thinking about frames and shapes.

The distance that a snowball travels was the focus in Maths, while more Science was explored when the children experimented with the impact of the  weight of snow on the distance achieved by snowball throws!
