THERE was a new air of welcome as you came into Coleford – just in time for Easter's Carnival of Transport.

Special welcome signs greeted visitors on the main roads into town and its attractions and tourist services are also listed.

The signs have been jointly funded by the town council, the district council and the South West Regional Development Agency with the aim of attracting more visitors and getting people to stop rather than drive through.

"The message is simple – Coleford is open for business and has much to offer locals and visitors alike," said Geoff Sindrey of Coleford Town Council.

"Coleford boasts a golf course, cinema, indoor play area for children, and a tourist information centre, along with many splendid pubs and restaurants.

"The town is also a great place to shop, not only for fresh food and other necessities but also for art and craftwork for which the area is becoming widely known."

Tourism officer Rachel Lewis said the town also planned to introduce finger posts later this spring to give directions to Coleford's attractions.
