CALLS have been made for CCTV coverage and more police on the streets after a spate of vandalism near Monmouth’s historic Monnow Bridge.

Tyres on six parked cars were slashed with a knife blade on Drybridge Street on the weekend of August 31 to September 1.

And the next weekend three town planters were upended nearby, opposite Drybridge House and in front of the sculpture on Monnow Bridge.

Calling it ‘disgusting behaviour’, tyre slashing victim Hannah Groome posted: “Six cars’ tyres slashed in Drybridge Street last night, some cars two tyres. All with a knife blade.

“Anyone who saw anything please get in touch. People carrying knives?! We can’t allow this kind of thing to happen, it could be your street next time.”

A witness posted seeing “two very drunk screaming girls” attack a van in Drybridge Street at about 12.30am and kick the door and punch the wing mirror on a car.

Paul Jarrold Tyres attended the scene on Sunday and changed the eight ruined tyres on the six cars, charging only the one call out fee.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We were called to a report of criminal damage on Drybridge Street, Monmouth at approximately 12.15pm on Sunday, September 1.

“A number of vehicles in the road have had tyres punctured. It is believed that the incident occurred overnight between approximately 6pm on Saturday and 8am on Sunday, September 1.

“Anyone with information is asked to please contact Gwent Police on 101 quoting log 239 of 1/9/19.

“You can also direct message us on Facebook or Twitter. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The following weekend there was more vandalism in the area when the planters were emptied onto the pavement.

A statement from Monmouth Town Council said: “Unfortunately, this weekend has seen two incidents of vandalism on some of the planters in Monmouth.

“Three planters within town were found tipped upside down with the contents on the pavement.

“These planters were opposite Drybridge House and in front of the sculpture by the Old Monnow Bridge.

“Furthermore, the bedding plants on the Old Monnow Bridge had been pulled up and thrown across the road.

“If anyone knows or saw anything please get in touch with the town council on 01600 715662. Many thanks.”

Many posters said proper CCTV was “now needed in Monmouth”.

Another said: “I’d rather see more police patrolling than CCTV. It’s better to prevent incidents from occurring in the first place.”
