AYLBURTON is to gain its own hotel. Building work is to be started shortly on premises next to The George public house which will provide a 14-bedroom travel lodge – a useful supplement to tourism and business accommodation in the Lydney area.
The George itself has undergone a facelift since being taken over by Derek and Jill Smallman last October. Having acquired a 35 year lease from proprietor Mr Andrew Baber, they have redesigned the two bars and restaurant.
"We are delighted the regulars stuck by us despite the place being closed for three months last summer," says Gloucester-born Derek.
"The darts team stayed in being even when all its matches were away games."
They ended joint top of the league, so there was to be a play-off with Sedbury. Cinderford-born Jill is herself a member of the ladies team.
The barn across the car park, also owned by Mr Baber, is being converted by local builder Brian Morgan to plans by Viney Hill architects David Hurcombe Associates.
"It's being designed in conformity with the nearby St Mary's parish church," says Derek.
"The internal decor will be in William Morris Arts and Crafts style," he adds. "Two ground floor suites will have disabled access."
Third "partner" in the management is Border collie Geordie, a "rescue" dog from the Isle of Skye. "She rounds up customers at closing time," says Derek.
They will be taking on the lease of the "lodge" when work is finished towards the end of the year. "With our restaurant already in being, it's an ideal arrangement for potential guests," Derek concludes.
