RESIDENTS of Newent and the surrounding area will be encouraged to take a walk on the wild side in July at a special Community and Wildlife Day organised by the town council.

The aim of the event (July 14, 10am to 3pm) is for local people to discover and walk the new Wildlife Area and to see the display of wildflowers in Toby’s Hole.

Volunteer guides will be on hand to accompany groups around the walk, explaining the benefits that wildflowers bring to the environment and the many habitats for wildlife that are found in the local area.

The organisers are encouraging businesses and organisations to get involved too, by promoting a wild animal or flower in their shop window - creating a wildlife trail in the town.

Several activities are already planned for this special family event including face painting, local bands, historic walks, a dog show, Joe Meek memorabilia and photos of bygone Newent. Organisation display stands and information will be on show in the Market Square and Memorial Hall as well as at the Lake. The Market House will also be open.

Forest of Dean Council is suspending parking charges in Lewell car park for the day to support the event.

Any businesses or organisations that would like to get involved should contact the Town Council on 01531 820638 or email [email protected]
