BUILDING work on a £40 million development of the former Dendix Brushes sites in lower Chepstow was delayed after the discovery of what is believed to be a medieval wall.

The Severn Quay development in Lower Church Street was put back three weeks as archaeologists investigated the find.

They remained on site but gave the go-ahead for the first phase of the works – three "top-end" townhouses.

Developers Wynndel Property Management say Severn Quay has "attracted the attention of a number of A-list celebrities" although no details have been provided.

The best penthouses on the 2.4 hectare site will set buyers back more than £475,000.

It is also claimed that an influx of affluent new residents will inject up to £1 million into the local economy.

Development director Peter Mills said: "Severn Quay is a long-awaited, eagerly-anticipated and much-needed addition to Chepstow that will benefit the town.

"It will completely transform a derelict and neglected part of the riverside while giving the local economy a vital cash injection."

The development of 56 houses, 113 apartments and eight office units could take up two years to complete.

The former factory and Furniture Smart buildings were demolished to make way for the new development.

As part of the scheme a promenade and look-out deck over the River Wye will be created.

Provision has also been made for a play area and a courtyard and lawn which will be open to the public.
