A COUPLE who met through pen-pal letters during the war have just celebrated their golden wedding.

Harold and Joyce Davies, who retired to live in Lydney 13 years ago, held a party at Lydney Golf Club for family and friends.

Harold had started work at Chepstow Farmers, now Countrywide, at the age of 14, and joined the army to serve in India and Burma.

Joyce, who made ammunition boxes in Portskewett, was given an address to write to by Harold's grandfather, who she met at a family wedding.

After three and a half years of courtship they married and lived in Rosemary Lane, Stroat, and Harold continued with his job where he stayed for 51 years.

They had two daughters and one son and now have six grandchildren.
