WASTE from Monmouthshire which cannot be recycled or composted will end up in Cardiff.

Monmouthshire Council has been working with four other councils in south-east Wales to come up with a solution for dealing with waste.

The Prosiect Gwyrdd (Project Green) partnership is made up of Monmouthshire, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan councils.

The partnership has named Viridor – which already provides waste services to Monmoutshire – as its "preferred bidder".

If the decision is ratified by the five councils, Viridor will treat the 172,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste produced in the area every year at the Trident Park energy from waste facility in Cardiff.

Energy from waste is seen as a better alternative to burying waste in the ground.

Preferred bidder status cannot be confirmed until it has been recommended by the partnership's joint committee on Friday (February 7) and approved by each council at meetings due to be held between February 26 and March 6.
