SOUDLEY School's maypole dancers didn't let July's record rainfall put them off their stride – they weaved their ribbons wearing wellies!

Cloudy skies and even outbreaks of sunshine made the annual fete to raise funds for the village hall a huge success. Profit for the day is estimated at around £1,300.

"Just in case there was a soaking for Soudley we had the option of using the village hall but everyone was up for the occasion and though we had some mud to contend with – a couple of cars had to be pulled off the field – it was a great day," said Chris Hawkins.

To beat the mud children from the village school gave their maypole dancing display wearing wellies.

To add to the family friendly atmosphere the George Community Choir from Newnham were in splendid voice while music was provided by the duo Jagged Hands. There was also an excellent display by members of the Forest of Dean Dog Training Club.

There were stalls and refreshments in the village hall and on the playing field, including a barbecue.

"It wouldn't have mattered if we had not made a penny. It was a real community event and, just to defy the weather, we had a really big turnout. Everyone voted the fete a huge succes," said Mr Hawkins.

The next fund-raiser for the village hall will be the popular flower show on Sunday, August 26.
