Ellwood Reserves' 16 game unbeaten run in league and cup was brought to an end in dramatic fashion by North Glos Division One leaders Woolaston on Saturday.

It was sweet revenge for Woolaston who were knocked out of the J.O. Roberts Cup by Ellwood a week earlier.

The visitors started brightly and took the lead inside the first 10 minutes through Jason James. However, Mike Jones evened things up from close range five minutes later and then put Woolaston in front from the penalty spot shortly after.

A depleted Ellwood were forced to re-organise further after losing both central defenders before half time and were unable to contain the busy Woolaston front runners.

Two second half goals from Pete Meredith were just reward for the home side's domination – enough put the result beyond doubt and keep Woolaston clear at the top of the division.

Ellwood Reserves travel to Stroud League Horsley in the third round of the County Cup this week hoping to get back to winning ways, while Woolaston look to further extend their lead in the league.

It has been a successful season so far for both teams at Ellwood. The First XI is riding high in the County League and they did their title aspirations no harm with a 2-1 win at home to second placed Patchway on Saturday – a result that moves them within striking distance of leaders Highridge who they have also beaten this season.

The Reserves have already won the Intermediate Section of the Dean Charities, beating Blakeney 2-1 in the final, and are still involved in both County and League cups.

Despite Saturday's defeat they still have games in hand on leaders Woolaston and are still very much in the league title chase.
