A SERIES of public meetings is to be held on plans to erect wind turbines on the Gwent Levels.

RES, one of the world's leading renewables companies, wants to erect three 100-metre high turbines capable of supplying the electricity equivalent to every home in Rogiet and Redwick for a year.

The first site is at Great House Farm near Undy where it is proposed to erect two turbines and the other is at Redwick at Longlands Lane where one tower is proposed.

Public meetings are planned at Undy, Rogiet and Redwick next week and will include photo montages of what the sites could look like.

The company has already distributed 8,500 information leaflets to homes including Magor, Undy, Rogiet and Caldicot.

Each turbine will be capable of generating at least 1.5 megawatts of what RES calls "clean, green" electricity which will be fed into the local power network.

Figures from the government suggest that 1.5 megawatts is capable of supplying power to 800 homes.

Planning applications have not yet been submitted to Monmouthshire Council, who will decide on the Great House Farm project, or Newport Council, which will deal with Longlands Lane.

RES project manager, Phil Grant said: "We are looking forward to discussing our proposals for what we consider to be two very good sites and learning the views of residents and other interested parties.

"Small-scale schemes like Longlands Lane and Great House Farm are important because they would generate local electricity for use on the local network.

"They will also make a valuable contribution to meeting Wales' ambitions to increase renewable energy generation and decrease dependence on expensive fossil fuel imports."

The exhibitions will take place on three consecutive days between 1pm and 7pm.

The first is at Undy Church and Community Hall in Church Road on Wednesday, September 12.

The following day the exhibition will be at the Rogiet Community Room in Station Road and the final one will be at Redwick Village Hall in Church Row on Friday, September 14.

Information will also be available on two websites, http://www.greathouse">www.greathouse

The sites will go live from September 14.
