VANDALS are threatening the future of Huntley's Village Hall.
The hard-working group who keep the facility running, say unless more is done to stop the mini crime wave there is little point in applying for a Lottery grant to improve the premises.
The committee is hoping to raise about £20,000 to carry out improvements and refurbish the hall which is the centre for a variety of village organisations.
"Some members are suggesting we should think twice about continuing with the plan if each time we achieve something we have to take a backward step because the hall is vandalised," said a spokesperson.
"It really is heart-breaking. A lot of work is put into running the hall but each time it is undone by needless outbreaks of vandalism."The latest damage happened on Saturday night when half a dozen toughened glass windows were broken. Repairs could cost £1,000.
In previous incidents a number of trees planted to mark the millennium were damaged and tiles on the roof over the village stocks – a local feature – were pulled off and thrown around.
The committee is urging local people to keep a close eye on the hall and to call the police immediately they suspect damage may occur.
"Unfortunately it is an on-going saga. About four weeks ago there was a report of youngsters on the roof and floodlights were damaged. There are occasions when you wonder whether all the work involved is worthwhile," said the spokesperson.
"If the vandalism is repeated there is a very real danger that the future of the hall will be threatened."
