The Forest Review readers rang up. They wrote letters. They sent emails. They accosted members of the Review staff as they tried to do their shopping. They were irate, angry, vexed, perplexed, and said some rather hasty things.

Over what? Well, it was about the sneaky story we printed on the back page of the Review last week, which explained that under new Welsh Assembly legislation, this newspaper would now have half the print run done in the Welsh language. Readers west of a line from Lydbrook to Lydney would, it said, have to learn Welsh in order to read their cherished Review...

But, as others spotted, the last line of the story read: 'Be aware that the new legislation comes into force on April 1st' and it was, in actual fact, our own April Fool!

Humourously, it became a fun trick last Monday for readers who saw through the spoof to repine to friends that the Review was now going to be in another language – and then watch their reaction!

The story was also mentioned in a round-up of April Fool stories on BBC Radio Wales. In English.
