THE West of Severn Under 13s Cricket League is attracting a host of young players to the sport.
There is huge enthusiasm for the competition in clubs throughout the district and none more so than at Parkend where a new junior section is attracting around 40 boys for the weekly practice sessions.
"We get youngsters from a wide area and they really enjoy themselves. It is not about making Parkend the best team in the district but to encourage youngsters to take part," said junior coach John Deave who runs Parkend's youth section with Nick Browning, Peter Timmins and Timmy Martin.
The junior league encourages all the players to bat and bowl - everyone gets four overs and teams start with 200 runs from which eight runs are deducted for each wicket which falls.
Parkend played Goodrich on Sunday and lost by 45 runs. Parkend scored 211 with Gary Preest hitting 22. For Goodrich Joe Griffiths bowled well and in three overs took three wickets for two runs.
Goodrich scored 254 with Sam Griffiths hitting 13. Parkend's best bowler was Ben Deave. In his three overs he took one wicket and conceded 13 runs.
