A DRY, sunny day helped 69 runners and, in some cases, their dogs to raise a healthy amount for Diabetes UK in Longhope recently.
The fun run and canicross event
was organised by Joanne York following her husband Nick’s severe illness with type one diabetes and subsequent pancreas transplant. The run took place in the fields and woodlands of Hillside Brewery and Joanne told the Review: “We raised a total of £588. The sun was shining but the rain in the few days before meant it was a seriously muddy course.
“The feedback has been brilliant from all who attended. We couldn’t have put the event on without the support of local businesses.
“Cameron’s Quality butchers donated bacon and Mitcheldean Mid-Counties Co-op gave us the rolls.
“Parish Mills Holidays sponsored the medals and Xite Energy donated recovery drinks for all runners. We also had 13 close friends and family volunteering on the day. We will be doing this again next year.”
Joanne’s husband, Nick, was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of 19 and has been looked after by diabetic nurses and doctors since then.
“Nine years ago
Nick’s diabetes became uncontrollable,” Joanne added. “He would suffer hypoglycaemic attacks up to five times a day. He lost his driving license and subsequently his job.
“Doctors tried different types of treatment but nothing worked. It was then that his consultant offered to put him on the waiting list for a pancreas transplant and seven years ago the transplant changed his and our family’s lives.
“He has not tested
his sugar levels or administered any insulin since given this precious gift. He still suffers other complications and health issues as a result of diabetes and we now raise money for Diabetes UK to raise awareness and help them fight this illness.”
Winner of the 5K was Ben Robins in 23m 54s and the winning canicross entrant was Clare Bond with a time of 31m 50s.
Joanne is running the London Marathon next year for Diabetes UK.
