STILL with an outside chance of promotion, Woolaston are keen to test themselves against the Premier Division's best. They will not have to wait long.
On Saturday week they entertain Newent Town, runaway favourites to take the title, in a semi-final of the J O Roberts Cup.
Newent scored a late, late goal to win 4 - 3 sending Woolaston back to Severnside licking their wounds.
"They are a good side," admits Woolaston coach David Crook. "But we are looking forward to the cup challenge and especially to playing them on our own ground," he says.
Woolaston boast a great run of cup successes. They won the Roberts trophy in 2009 and 2007 and were runners-up in 2008. "Everyone enjoys a cup run and we have had a lot of success in recent years. We are hoping it will continue but it will be a big ask against strong opposition," said Crook.
With a squad bolstered by the addition of players previously with Tidenham, Crook has plenty of players to pick from and points to the success of the club's reserve team in Division 2 as a good indication of strength in depth.
"We have lost a few players to university and the very promising James Buffrey to a serious knee injury, but we are still scoring goals. Carl Adams has scored 20 from midfield and Paul Crook has 15 or 16 so things are going well," he said.
Crook had words of praise for struggling Mushet who have picked up just one point this season.
"For 20 minutes they looked a more than decent side and played very well but once we squeezed ahead they lost confidence and went downhill," he said.
By half-time Woolaston led 4 - 0 with goals from Paul Crook (2), Gareth Rose and Carl Adams. Crook netted twice more in the second-half and Mushet's mauling was completed with goals by John Guest and Adam Giles.
