Wye Gymnastics and Galaxy Cheerleading has been recognised as Club of the Year by Welsh Gymnastics.

Welsh Gymnastics is the governing body for clubs nationwide - leading, developing, supporting and acting as the guardian of the sport in Wales.

The awards recognise and celebrate the achievement and contribution of the gymnastics community.

The Caldicot-based club collected the main award for its ‘passion and dedication to gymnastics’.

As part of the application the club was able to showcase its growth and development whilst also highlighting its community endeavours.

The club offers a range of disciplines at a fully-equipped training centre, with classes for all ages from recreational cheerleading to competitive squads competing in tumbling, acrobatics, team gym, cheerleading, contemporary and lyrical, pom dance, jazz and hip hop.

Clubs from all over Wales were nominated but only three were shortlisted, with Wye competing against Barry YMCA and Fusion Gymnastics. Judges look at the opportunities provided by the club, the vision and structure whilst also considering coach and volunteer development as well as community partnerships.

Wye’s application impressed with its significant growth and development following a complete organisation restructure, which has seen club membership increase by 37 per cent in just a year.

Siwan Davies, Welsh Gymnastics’ head of development, said the Caldicot club “really stood out as winners based on their revised strategies and subsequent development”.

“The club is a welcome addition to the local community with classes attracting toddlers to teens and their results in national competitions are testament to the team’s efforts,” she said.

“Other factors like their classes catering for children with disabilities and the club’s established sustainable development strategy really show the behind the scenes endeavours of this local club,” she said.

General Manager Carly Hawke was delighted to collect the award, praising her team and the wider community for their help.

“This win is for everybody at Wye. We work as a team and this is real testimony to those efforts,” she said.

She said the club was dedicated to supporting the wider community and making sport and exercise available to all.

“We’re exceptionally proud of initiatives like our Young Leaders Programme which currently sees 30 young people between the ages of 12 and 16 volunteering on a weekly basis,” she added.
