St Briavels 164 all out (38 overs) Penallt and Redbrook 146 all out (40 overs)

A CAPTAIN’S innings of 68 – the top score of the day – by Graham Hyde was not enough to prevent Penallt and Redbrook slipping to defeat in this Wye Valley derby.

Earlier, new S Briavels signing Matthew Jones hit five fours and four sixes on his way to 63 as the hosts, who had been put into bat, posted a target of 165.

Lyndon Jacques got the visitors off to a dream start when opener Darryl Reynolds was caught by Hyde for two.

St Briavels captain Stuart Williams was caught and bowled by Chris Margretts for 20 to make it 25-2, but opener Keith Powles and new man Jones steadied things by putting on 70 before the former went for 22, caught by Myles Evill off Greg Calderbank to make it 95-3.

Liam Hurcombe had Jones caught to make it 124-4, but it was Geoff Eaves who was most productive with the ball, taking 4-37.

In Penallt and Redbrook’s reply, the hosts’ David Floyd and Darryl Reynolds both took three wickets apiece and James Buffrey and Matthew Jones took two apiece.

Floyd finished with figures of 3-27 off eight overs while Reynolds’ four overs returned 3-16.

Buffrey also claimed the wicket of Liam Hurcombe, the only Redbrook batsman to make it into double figures apart from Hyde, when he was caught by Stuart Williams for 28.

The visitors’ innings closed on the final ball of their 40 overs, but at that stage they were still 18 runs in arrears.
